Changes to Ontario MTO Commercial Licence Requirements in 2026

As of May 11, 2026, applicants for Ontario commercial licences including Class A, B, C, D, E, and F must now provide documentation verifying:

• Ontario is their primary residence
• Their legal status in Canada
• Eligibility to work in Canada

These requirements apply when applying for or renewing a commercial driver’s licence.

This change is intended to strengthen licensing standards and ensure commercial drivers meet all legal employment requirements within Canada.

Continued Focus on MELT Training Standards

Ontario continues to strengthen the Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program for Class A commercial drivers. The MTO has updated curriculum requirements and introduced more detailed lesson plan standards to improve consistency and training quality across approved schools.
