Practical Training
Pre-Trip Inspection Training -
A proper pre-trip inspection is one of the most important responsibilities of a commercial driver. At Ontario Truck Training Academy, we provide in-depth pre-trip inspection training to ensure every student understands how to identify potential safety issues before hitting the road.
Our hands-on training covers:
- Step-by-step inspection procedures required by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
- How to identify major and minor defects on commercial vehicles.
- Proper use of inspection tools, checklists, and reporting methods.
- Developing strong habits to maintain compliance and safety every day.
Students practice real inspections on commercial vehicles under the guidance of experienced instructors. By the end of training, drivers gain the knowledge and confidence to complete thorough inspections, reduce risks, and meet all regulatory requirements.
Why it matters:
A well-done pre-trip inspection keeps vehicles safe, prevents costly breakdowns, and ensures compliance with industry standards. Most importantly, it protects drivers and everyone else on the road.
In-Cab Training -
At Ontario Truck Training Academy, we believe the best way to prepare future drivers is through hands-on, one-on-one training in the cab. Our in-cab training provides students with direct, real-world driving experience under the guidance of our experienced instructors.
Training includes:
- One-on-one training over the road to build confidence and safe driving habits.
- Exposure to different types of transmissions (including standard and automatic) to ensure versatility.
- Practice with various trailer sizes for well-rounded skills.
- Carefully designed driving routes that take students through industrial truck areas and real traffic situations.
This approach allows students to gain practical experience in a controlled, supportive environment while learning how to safely handle commercial vehicles in diverse conditions. By the time they graduate, students are not only prepared for their road test, but also equipped with the confidence and skills needed to succeed on the job.
Coupling & Uncoupling Training -
Proper coupling and uncoupling is a critical skill for every professional truck driver. At Ontario Truck Training Academy, we provide hands-on instruction to ensure students can safely connect and disconnect tractor-trailers with confidence.
Our training covers:
- Step-by-step procedures for safely coupling and uncoupling.
- Identifying and securing all connections (air lines, electrical lines, and fifth wheel).
- Recognizing and preventing common hazards and mistakes.
- Performing safety checks to confirm a secure connection before operating.
Students practice under the direct supervision of experienced instructors, using real equipment in a controlled environment. By the end of this module, drivers gain the knowledge and confidence to perform coupling and uncoupling procedures efficiently, safely, and in compliance with industry standards.
Backing Training -
Safe and accurate backing is one of the most important skills for any commercial driver. At Ontario Truck Training Academy, we provide step-by-step backing training in a controlled environment, with a strong focus on safety and precision.
Our training includes:
- 90-Degree Backing – mastering tight turns into docks and designated spaces.
- Offset Backing – learning how to safely maneuver when changing lanes or shifting parking positions.
- Safety-First Practices – using proper mirrors, spotting techniques, and safe speeds to prevent collisions and ensure full awareness of surroundings.
Students receive hands-on guidance from experienced instructors, building the skills and confidence needed to perform these maneuvers both during the road test and in real-world situations.
By the end of training, drivers are prepared to handle even the most challenging backing scenarios safely and effectively.
